Edge computing is a term you’ll often hear in tech discussions around speed and data processing. But what does it really mean?

In simple terms, edge computing refers to processing data closer to where it’s created instead of relying on a central data center far away. Traditionally, when a device like a smart camera captures footage, it sends the data to the cloud for processing. With edge computing, the camera—or a nearby device—does that work right there, on the “edge” of the network.

Why does this matter? Because it cuts down the time it takes for data to travel, making things faster. It also reduces bandwidth usage and helps with privacy since not all data has to leave the local device.

A great real-world example is in self-driving cars. These vehicles need to make split-second decisions. If they had to send data to a distant server and wait for instructions, it would be too slow. Edge computing allows the car to analyze data in real-time and respond immediately.

Another example: retail stores using smart cameras to track foot traffic. Instead of sending hours of video to the cloud, edge devices can analyze the footage and only send insights—like how many customers entered or which shelves attracted the most attention.

Edge computing is also transforming industries like healthcare, manufacturing, and agriculture by enabling quicker responses and more efficient operations.

As more devices become “smart,” the need for edge computing grows. Companies in the devops space play a key role in managing the infrastructure that makes edge computing work.
